John Julian

We have been fans of sculptor and designer Julian Sainsbury for a long time now and absolutely love the John Julian collection of kitchenware, serveware and tableware. The designs are known for their pared back aesthetic, neutral palette and finely judged simplicity.  When we designed and installed the Longford pantry in our Felsted showroom, it seemed like a natural step to collaborate with John Julian and we could not be more thrilled with the outcome.

We love collaborating with companies who share our values, work in an open and authentic way and have a genuine love and passion for design. You can’t help but fall in love with the Longford pantry, it’s the most wonderful space and displaying the stoneware range from John Julian means that the look and feel of this space is on another level.

Similar to the way we work at HM, Julian works from his own artisan workshop in Wiltshire – none of the usual mass manufacturing going on there. He uses traditional methods including hand throwing and a hand jolley, which allow him and his small team of skilled colleagues to bring more character to each piece. We love that both HM and John Julian share this approach to manufacturing – it brings a real synergy to the relationship.

It’s so important to us at HM to keep the tradition of cabinetmaking alive – it’s something we really are passionate about and the reason why we believe in investing in the hiring and training of apprentice cabinetmakers. It’s only natural therefore that we love the fact that each and every piece of stoneware and porcelain in the range by John Julian is created and fired in the Wiltshire workshop.

Julian’s distinctive design style is utilitarian with a classical influence – resulting in a purity derived from considerations of functionality.
