Flooring
Brampton natural limestone by HM Flooring Library

PROJECT DETAILS

We designed, manufactured and installed the kitchen which is set within a huge open plan area, walk through / walk in pantry, utility room and boot room and supplied the Brampton natural limestone flooring from HM Flooring Library which spans the entire area.

Kitchen & Pantry
Opposite is the main storage run with the classic stainless steel Sub-Zero fridge freezer flanked by a crockery cupboard and an everyday pantry. The island acts as the main prep area with the huge Kohler deerfield sink positioned centrally with the Quooker boiling water tap. The integrated dishwasher and pull out bin are also located here together with the Fisher & Paykel cool drawer.

The star of this kitchen though is undoubtedly the walk through / walk in pantry. This was designed by Peter Humphrey to bring the kitchen in and make it feel less vast – this was a huge success and the clients absolutely love this aspect of the design.

Utility Room
The utility room – or ‘engine room’ as the clients call it – has everything you need for washing and drying, including a thermostatically controlled drying cupboard.

Boot Room
We also designed and installed the boot room cabinetry in the hallway from the backdoor and garage which has masses of open and closed storage as you come in from outside.

PROJECT DETAILS
This incredible HM project comprises an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting room with TV cabinetry and drinks cabinetry, pantry, utility room, boot room and hallway cabinetry in a bespoke family home by St. Philips Homes. So often we can get caught up with how interior design looks, but really it’s about how it make you feel. The brief for this project was to create calm, relaxing and cohesive spaces with an easy sense of flow:

We wanted to find a bespoke, handcrafted kitchen company who genuinely cared about how our clients would use their kitchen and living space. After careful consideration, we opted for Humphrey Munson. The team at HM worked alongside St. Philips Homes to fully capture, understand and hone the brief for our clients; making suggestions which ultimately made a huge difference to the project. HM’s experience of interior architecture enabled us to find space to incorporate a walk in pantry, utility and boot room. We think this is an extraordinary family kitchen and living area, which balances a beautiful aesthetic with really useable, functional space. Together, we have brought this home to life and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with HM’s design, project management and on site teams during the process.”

At Humphrey Munson we don’t have sales people, we simply have a design team, trained by our founder Peter Humphrey, who see design holistically and understand the value that design has on our clients and their wellbeing. Our design approach is inclusive and all-encompassing because as we know, a whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. For us there is no greater satisfaction than knowing our projects meet and exceed our clients’ expectations.

Kitchen
A false chimney focal point was designed to house the Lacanche Chalonnais range cooker with large three drawer chests either side. The working side of the island is the main scullery area with a large Kohler under-mount sink, Quooker hot water tap and two dishwashers for maximum convenience. There is also a plumbed in Miele combination-steam oven to compliment the cooking capability of the Lacanche. The island has seating for four as well as Sub-Zero fridge freezer drawers and Miele under-counter wine storage. A storage run includes tall crockery cupboard, French door Gaggenau fridge freezer and breakfast pantry with integrated Miele microwave, coffee machine and toaster.

Walk-In Pantry
The classic walk in pantry featuring open pantry tables, quartz worktops and artisan shelves so there is plenty of storage for non-perishable food storage as well as countertop appliances and cookery books.

Soft Seating / Dining Area
The TV cabinetry provides a lovely balance of scale and proportion across the large room and offers a wonderful opportunity to display decorative objects as well as additional storage for wine with x-frame cabinetry. The ultimate drinks cabinet provides a spot to decant and serve wine or fix a drink with countertop space for storing spirits and an under-counter integrated fridge for mixers and soft drinks (a top freezer section is great for storing ice made in the Gaggenau fridge freezer).

Utility / Boot Room
A combined utility and boot room ensures the perfect spot to decamp with hanging space for coats and bags and a bespoke bench seat to put on and take off shoes or boots. The boiler is carefully concealed away in a tall storage cupboard, while on the opposite wall is the main utility run with the washing machine and tumble dryer housed in a tall cupboard, sink area with open shelving and another tall cupboard which is a thermostatically controlled drying cupboard.

Hallway
The hallway features bespoke inset shelving with integrated lighting and another bench seat with hooks above for hanging everyday coats and jackets.

PROJECT DETAILS
Set within the beautiful Hampshire countryside, this incredible country house started life as a Tudor farmhouse which was later extended in the Victorian era. The most recent development by our clients created a contemporary extension bridging the Tudor and Victorian elements and incorporated a new kitchen and pantry.

Description
This huge scale renovation took over three years to complete from pre-planning to occupation. Our clients’ brief was specific: to create an open plan kitchen, pantry and dining area with additional / optional space for soft seating. A key objective was to bring the newly landscaped garden inside thereby creating a hugely sociable space that the family could enjoy on the weekends with friends, particularly during the summer months.

As well as creating a kitchen, pantry and dining area, Humphrey Munson was commissioned to design two boot rooms and a utility room in the older Tudor part of the house and ensure that the family’s time at the house is as fuss free and easy as possible.

Kitchen
What’s so lovely about this project is the moment when you walk into the kitchen – whether that’s from the hallway, the garden or the snug – it’s just an absolute ‘wow’ as every element from the interior architecture, the cabinetry, furniture, the colours, finishes, materials and textures all work together in perfect harmony.

Speaking plainly, this is the ultimate light, bright and airy kitchen illuminated by the skylights from the new extension and vast bi-fold glass doors that reveal a view across the lush green garden and beyond. It’s really hard to describe just how dreamy this space is in words!

Cooking Run
The main cooking run has a false chimney concealing the Westin extraction unit and provides the housing for the wonderful Lacanche Chalonnais range cooker finished in stainless steel with a polished nickel trim. The configuration chosen for the top of the Lacanche is the classic three burner hob, induction rings and electric plancha for maximum cooking versatility. The antique effect mirror splashback behind conceals splashes and offers a constant reflection of the beautiful outdoors.

Either side of the Lacanche are two countertop cupboards finished in the HM Duffle paint colour. To the left is a breakfast cupboard with open shelving used to store crockery, tea and coffee whilst the countertop is a great spot for a toaster and bread board. The opposite end of the cooking run is another countertop cupboard used to store glassware in the open shelving and large everyday appliances like the NutriBullet.

Island
Opposite the cooking run is the island which is predominantly used for food prep. The side closest to the cooking run has a double Kohler sink and Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse and Quooker hot water tap finished in polished nickel. Under the counter either side are two Miele dishwashers and on the far right end, a pull out bin to help make clearing away quicker and easier (especially with multiple guests staying at the house at any one time). A Miele combi-steam oven is positioned at the other end of the island, perfect for quick family meals or steaming veggies for a roast cooked in the Lacanche. The other side of the island has seating for three (the client chose the Vincent Sheppard Joe counter stools) so that children can do homework or guests can sit and chat whilst the host cooks dinner nearby. What’s so wonderful about the island here is that it completely anchors the room and is finished in HM paint colour Black Thorn; a deep, rich green chosen to tie in with the green outdoor surroundings.

Dining Area
Just off the island is the dining area which has a Portobello oak Lexington dining table taking centre stage in this space and comfortably seats 8-10 people. Within arms reach is the nearby run of Nickleby cabinetry – also finished in HM ‘Duffle’. You may notice this run is integrated into the wall itself so as not to impose on the clean lines of the open space (just as the main cooking run is). At the centre of the run is a Gaggenau French door fridge freezer, flanked either side by two crockery cupboards and open shelving either end. This ideal mix of open and closed storage means bowls, serving plates and other more unsightly items can be hidden from view in the cupboards until needed at the table.

Walk-In Pantry
The walk in pantry was an absolute necessity for this open plan kitchen space, and offers the family an abundance of open storage for dried food, jars, pots and pans on the artisan shelves, while baskets, hampers and larger pans can be stored under the countertop helping to keep the kitchen surfaces free of clutter.

Boot Rooms
Both boot rooms are finished in darker paint colours which gives them a moody look and feel which really suits the age and heritage of this Tudor end of the house. The slightly smaller ‘Victorian’ style boot room is located just off the main kitchen and has a door that leads out onto the garden. Finished in a completely bespoke HM colour just for this project, a bench seat runs along the right-hand side and opens to reveal space for shoes, boots and is also ideal for things like badminton rackets, footballs etc. An artisan shelf with coat pegs is positioned directly which is ideal for hats, bags and baskets.

The main boot room is located on the opposite side of the house near the entrance and has a plethora of useful storage space. Finished in HM ‘Lock & Load’, the large bench seat is used to store bags and shoes, and when closed is a great spot to get a bag ready for a day out, or even place a basket of fruit from the garden whilst you take off your coat. The artisan shelf above has coat pegs beneath for everyday coats and jackets, and to the right handy open shelving for baskets. Leading on from the open shelves is tall closed cabinetry that conceals space for coats, wellies and well, anything else you can think of!

Utility Room
The utility room also sits at the front of the house next to the main boot room where the dark blue HM ‘Burlington’ paint colour is a beautiful contrast. Illuminated by a window at the centre there are two runs of cabinetry, the first is to the left side of the space with a Villeroy & Boch sink and Perrin & Rowe Ionian tap at the centre. Beneath the worktop either side of the sink is a Miele washing machine and Miele tumble dryer and directly opposite, a tall run of Nickleby cabinetry concealing a drying cabinet and two shelved cabinets providing essential storage for laundry and other useful items like a vacuum cleaner.

Brampton limestone flooring was used throughout the project. The natural soft grey tones and markings of the limestone are perfect for this classic contemporary space whilst being a durable, practical option for areas of high traffic both indoors and outdoors. PROJECT DETAILS
This renovation was all about creating a really light and airy space for the family to relax and unwind in the evenings and at weekends. The dynamic architecture & design practice Selencky Parsons reconfigured the 4 storey house to include an atrium that floods every level with natural daylight all year round.

Cooking Run
The main cooking run has a traditional white AGA range cooker with a two-ring gas hob to the left hand side set within the contemporary panelled canopy. There is also a second pyrolytic oven on the island which, together with the gas hob, provides essential summer cooking when the AGA is turned off. Large countertop cupboards with bi-fold doors provide countertop space for appliances and storage space above and below. The left hand side cupboard has a bean-to-cup coffee machine integrated into the cabinetry with serving trays either side.

Island
The island is the main prep area with a large integrated sink and boiling water tap, dishwasher and bin with seating for 3 on the back of the island – ideal for the children to have breakfast but also for friends gathering for pre-dinner drinks and appetisers. There is also an integrated refrigerator on the island for storing essentials like milk and juice for the busy morning rush.

Main Storage Run
The main storage run is on the opposite side of the room and has a cook’s pantry, French door fridge freezer with ice and water, tall crockery cupboard, desk area with shelving above and a full size bookcase.

TV Cabinetry
The TV cabinetry is a classic HM design and provides the perfect mix of open and closed storage, while the dining area is home to a bespoke Lexington dining table with Humphrey Munson’s bespoke Havisham dining chairs (the same design as the counter stools) finished in Berkeley oak with leather upholstery.

Other design details include lighting by Hector Finch, sofa by Kingcomb Sofas and the bespoke coffee table is a new design by HM.

PROJECT DETAILS
A large scale renovation and extension was the only way to bring this large Edwardian family home into the modern age and provide extended living space for Lily Paulson-Ellis, her husband, three children and two labradors. We were delighted to work with Lily on this project and incredibly inspired by her vision for the house which has a classic and timeless feel with all the modern conveniences we know and love. As you walk into the main hallway, the first thing that strikes you is the space – it feels much wider and more spacious than it looks and opens out towards the rear of the house into a huge light and airy room where the kitchen, dining and snug area is located together with a walk in pantry and wine room – this is the project that really does have it all! We love the architectural details and the way the extension roof was designed with exposed brick walls and crittal doors to the garden – Lily’s attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this project.

Kitchen / Pantry / Wine Storage
Capturing a modern feel with contemporary features such as the Verona quartz waterfall island and specifying the new bespoke Marton handles by Joseph Giles, this sociable kitchen was designed to scale up and down with entertaining in mind. A contemporary overmantel design set on the false chimney provides the perfect focal point for the room and houses the induction hob with two Miele ovens below. The antique effect mirror splashback is a showstopper and bounces the light back across the room and allows the cook to see what’s happening behind! Plenty of storage within countertop cupboards either side of the chimney for the coffee machine, toaster, breakfast things and other appliances with a full size crockery cupboard to the right hand side for storing all the glassware, tableware and serving ware.

The island is the workhorse of this kitchen with two dishwashers, a pull out integrated bin and a double deerfield sink with InSinkErator waste disposal. Seating at the island for three provides a space for friends to enjoy a glass of wine and additional storage either side in the cupboards.

There is masses of storage in this kitchen thanks to the French door fridge freezer and the walk in pantry which is purely for food storage. This is a cook’s kitchen so plenty of storage was essential! We also designed the wine room cabinetry which has a mix of storage with a mirror back to add interest to this area and again the crittal door keeps the balance of contemporary and classic perfectly.

Utility / Boot Room
The utility / boot room is just off the hallway and includes two double storage cupboards – one that conceals the washing machine and tumble dryer, and the other is for the hoover, ironing board etc. A sink with storage either side was a practical choice with open shelving to provide more shelving together with the full size boot / shoe storage just opposite the main storage run. Lastly, a bench seat with upholstered fabric cushion provides the perfect place for children to get their shoes on before school and also contains useful lift up storage.

PROJECT DETAILS
A cook’s kitchen through and through, this wonderful project includes the kitchen and dining area, home office, dresser cabinetry in the sitting area and the utility room. The clients had a very clear idea of what they wanted the space to look like after a long weekend in Stockholm where they fell in love with the understated yet very elegant Swedish interiors that combine a discreet and calming colour palette, with warm oak and beautiful and original decorative pieces.

A false chimney focal point was designed to house the Lacanche range cooker with a traditional overmantel and three drawer chests either side. The working side of the island is the main scullery area with two large under-mount sinks looking out across the garden and a large integrated French door fridge freezer adjacent. The island acts as the main prep area with masses of storage below as well as the essential integrated bin and under-counter fridge. A bank of tall cabinetry is home to the cook’s pantry, breakfast pantry (central) and the crockery cupboard. Tucked around the corner from the main kitchen is the home office area which is a quiet nook to catch up on emails and admin.  A beautiful glazed dresser was designed to display the beautiful Astier de Villatte ceramics owned by the clients.

Utility Room
All the usual suspects are here but designed in a way to create a super calm and relaxing space. The washing machine and tumble dryer are hidden away behind tall cabinetry as is the tall wine storage unit. Open shelving ensures the space doesn’t feel too dense and overloaded, and provides a beautiful visual connection to the kitchen.

PROJECT DETAILS
Creating this dream beach house in North Cornwall took a few years of meticulous planning and building but the end result is undeniably worth the wait. Occupying a highly coveted spot just moments from one of North Cornwall’s most picturesque beaches, this incredible home was designed with a large open plan kitchen and dining area in mind right from the beginning.

The owners wanted the space to feel rustic and relaxed but with all the modern conveniences we know and love so there is this brilliant mix of tradition and innovation that ensures the kitchen feels contemporary but in a classic, fresh way that suits this house perfectly.

Kitchen / Storage
This is a house for entertaining on a big scale so the design stage of the project really focused on creating a space that worked for food prep, cooking, dining, and also clearing away easily after the party is over. The AGA gives the kitchen that traditional look and feel and is particularly lovely in the winter after wet and windy walks along the beaches. For the summer months when the AGA is turned off, the Gaggenau 200 series pyrolytic ovens and gas hob on the island are used (and also during dinner parties when precision cooking is required).

The traditional AGA creates a central focal point set within a classic false chimney with the island in front acting as the main food prep area with a prep sink and pull out bin to maximise convenience. As this is a holiday home, the chilled food storage was really key as the family wanted to be able to shop and store larger quantities of perishable items easily so the vast Gaggenau fridge freezers provide that comfortably and also each model has an ice-maker which is great for parties.

Dining Area
Towards the dining area is a large bi-fold breakfast area with masses of storage for tableware, glassware and servingware but also space for the coffee machine, toaster and breakfast things so that guests can help themselves easily in the morning rather than waiting for their hosts to serve them. Lighting within the glazed sections provides a lovely ambient glow in the evenings and connects the dining area to the kitchen despite the vast space it occupies.

A large scullery area under the window provides plenty of space to clear away after meals and actually plates can be stacked just out of sight due to the pantry cupboard towards the end of the run. The island is a sociable hub for serving drinks and canapés before meals with the two Miele under-counter wine storage units positioned side by side for chilling white wine and dessert wine.

Seating Area
Just off the kitchen is a lovely sitting room which library style bookshelves designed, manufactured and installed by HM along with the kitchen for continuity and flow. The paint colour HM Farthing II is used with accent lighting a nod once again to the location.

Utility / Boot Room
Finally, a combined utility / boot room with adjoining shower / wet room is the final piece of clever interior spacial planning at this project. Plenty of space for washing and drying clothes, a mix of open and closed storage, a butler sink for washing down sandy items and also the shower to hose off the dog ensures that living here is easy with everything you need to hand.

PROJECT DETAILS
A Georgian country house reimagined, redesigned and reinvigorated for the young family taking up residence in this historic family home in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside.

This open plan space required significant architectural input from Alex McIntyre Architects who provided a comprehensive architectural service from inception to completion and the end result is just absolutely spot on. Light, airy and spacious but with a welcoming feel, this open plan kitchen, dining and sitting room benefits from a wealth of natural light and generous proportions.

Kitchen
The kitchen has an understated classic focal point with the AGA positioned in the original chimney. The island was deliberately left clear so that the clients could have plenty of space to prepare food on a big scale! Frequently used to entertaining numerous weekend guests, this is a hard-working kitchen that needed lots of room for food prep and cooking, but also clearing away. The scullery run has a large double cast iron sink with an open glass storage wall cabinet designed with hanging space below used for glassware that does not go into the dishwasher.

In terms of food storage, the large French door fridge freezer is integrated behind cabinetry and positioned next to a butler’s pantry cupboard so that it feels more like a piece of freestanding furniture.

Pantry
A walk in pantry with another fridge freezer and masses of space for food storage provides the essential overflow needed for entertaining on a big scale.

Boot Room
A separate boot room with hand-painted Nickleby cabinetry finished in the aptly named paint colour HM Grouse, provides a handy spot to decamp after being outdoors with a large butler sink positioned under the window. This is an original butler sink from the older part of the house and cleaned up and reused here as a nod to the heritage of the house.

The clients wanted open storage for coats and boots so we designed the bench so that wellies can fit underneath. Everything is easy to reach but we also incorporated a bank of tall cupboards to provide further storage. Integrated dog beds provide an area for tired pups to crash out after being out in the field all day.

PROJECT DETAILS
Each new project brings new ideas and new incredible spaces. Built in the 18th century this Grade II listed home was the perfect canvas to design and create a fuss free kitchen and pantry for the young family to eat, work and live in on a day to day basis. We also designed the cabinetry and dining table in the adjoining dining room, boot room and utility room.

Open plan kitchen zoned for functionality and symmetry. The left side of the kitchen features open shelving for cookbooks, tableware etc. At the centre is an island used for food prep and has banquette seating and Berkeley oak table for informal week-night dinners. At the far end of the kitchen is the cooking run with a countertop breakfast hidden behind painted cabinetry on the left, this flows on to an AGA which has worktop spaceside side for prep that leads to a scullery run for quick and easy clearing away.

Kitchen
Zoned to perfection, the kitchen has areas for food prep (the island to the left), cooking (the AGA) and clearing away (the sink run to the right). Open shelving to the right of the AGA keeps all glassware in one easy to reach place whilst leaving available worktop space below for food prep.

Storage & Pantry
This countertop breakfast cupboard has bi-fold doors which open to reveal shelving that provides the perfect storage for cups, tea and coffee. The countertop below is ideal for preparing drinks or toast in the morning, then once finished, it can all be shut away out of sight.

There’s nothing better than having a place for everything and for everything to have its place so the walk in pantry is opposite the island and provides a mix of open storage for dried goods and small everyday appliances etc. To the right of the pantry is a Fisher & Paykel French door fridge freezer so that both dry and fresh goods are stored in the same area of the room.

The perfect mix of old meets new, this exposed brick wall helps to create the ideal balance of classic meets contemporary in this kitchen. The desk top is Berkeley oak, which is the same as the accent wood used throughout the kitchen and provides a place for work to be finished while dinner is being prepared.

Laundry Room
More than just a utilitarian space, the laundry room is painted in HM Windward and finished with aged brass hardware and tap to create a warmer finish in keeping with the heritage of the home.

Boot Room
Boot rooms don’t have to be a large affair and this boot room space has open bench seating so that shoes and skateboards can be tucked away when not in use. Above the bench seat is an artisan shelf with coat pegs and at the end of the run is a cupboard for coats, jackets and boots.

Dining Room
The formal dining room in this project is just off the main kitchen which makes it easily accessible for the host and guests alike. This room proudly features a Berkeley oak Blakeney dining table designed and manufactured by Humphrey Munson with a drinks prep area (also by HM) tucked into the corner of the room so that the table can be set and drinks can be served to guests without having to leave the room.

PROJECT DETAILS

Clients with older properties often want to keep as many of the original features and personality as possible and this kitchen is no different. Full of quintessential English character this country kitchen was once a series of small dark rooms that has now been transformed into an incredible light and airy kitchen, dining area, walk in pantry, boot room and utility room.

Kitchen

This U-shape kitchen begins at the cooking run to the left which was designed around an existing chimney that could not be altered or removed. Concealed inside the chimney is the Westin extraction unit providing essential extraction for the gas hob below. The splashback is quartz and the same as the surrounding worktops for continuity. To the left of the chimney surrounded by tall cabinetry are the 400 series Gaggenau ovens chosen for their impeccable precision; a combi-steam oven sits above the large pyrolytic oven below to provide ultimate cooking versatility.

Flowing to the right away from the cooking area is the sink run which looks out onto the rolling green countryside beyond. Everything you need to clear away efficiently is in this part of the kitchen – a large Kohler sink is at the centre with a polished nickel Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse, underneath the counter to the left is a pull-out bin and to the right an integrated Miele dishwasher.

At the far right of the sink run under the counter are two integrated trays, perfect for carrying crockery from the nearby artisan shelves to the dining area, island or vice versa. The open artisan shelving on the right side of the kitchen are a great way to store everyday plates, glasses and larger servingware such as jugs and vases as you can grab what you need without having to root around in cupboards at a moment’s notice. At the end of this run is the counter-top breakfast pantry that offers a plethora of storage. The open shelves above the counter are used to store teas, biscuits, cups etc whilst the countertop below is great for small to medium everyday appliances like a Dualit toaster or baskets of bread. Under the counter to the left of the breakfast cupboard is an integrated fridge ideal for storing things like milk and butter, both within arms-reach of the pantry and island.

Island

The Island is finished in HM Brolly Blue, a colour that looks completely at home in the calm light surroundings of this space. The side closest to the cooking run has pull out pot drawers, so that pots and pans can be put straight onto the Miele stove ready for ingredients, keeping the kitchen surface clutter free. On the opposite side of the island closest to the breakfast cupboard there is open shelving used to store books and mixing bowls etc. Seating for two has been designed at one end; perfect for checking emails with a cup of coffee from the drinks cupboard in the morning or for children to do their homework after school while the client makes dinner for the family.

Dining Area

Opposite the kitchen is a banquette seating area all designed, manufactured and installed by HM with a small table that is ideal for low key family dinners.

Walk-In Pantry

Just off the main kitchen is a walk in pantry that offers a huge amount of storage which, for a busy family with young children is ideal. Open artisan shelves hold masses of jars, packs of dried foods and cans whist the quartz worktop below is used for food prep. Under the counter to the right is a deep shelf that has been used as drinks storage. A Miele wine cooler and integrated Miele fridge freezer flank the left side of this pantry, both take cold food and drink storage pressure off the main kitchen and can be shut away out of sight of guests when not in use.

Utility Room

Utility rooms come in all shapes and sizes, this utility in particular is ‘compact luxury’ at its very best. Open artisan shelving keeps baskets and cleaning products out of the reach of little ones and off the countertop keeping the small space clutter free. Stacking this Miele washing machine and tumble dryer is a great way to save space, and makes getting washing in and out of the machines so much easier as you don’t have to reach down and root around for that last sock or towel.

Boot Room

The boot room area is clean, simple but very effective. The bench seat is a dual purpose piece of cabinetry which provides a handy spot to put on or take off boots / wellies, and you can utilise the lift up storage underneath for infrequently used items or shoes. Above the bench seat is an artisan shelf with coat pegs so that coats and jackets are easily accessible when coming in and out of the home.

PROJECT DETAILS

This stunning family kitchen in Cobham, Surrey is open plan family living at its very best. The project consists of a kitchen, dining area and sitting area which are combined in one space in a newly built extension. The original kitchen was in a small, dark and unworkable room that is a direct contrast to the result of this renovation – a light, airy and welcoming space with two roof lanterns and two sets of glazed doors which open up onto the garden for the warm summer months ahead.

Kitchen

The main cooking appliances in this kitchen are the two Gaggenau 400 series pyrolytic ovens which are integrated below the Gaggenau induction hob and set within a false chimney which houses the Westin extraction. The antique effect mirror splashback – a bespoke piece commissioned by HM – bounces the natural light from the garden back across the room. Either side of the Gaggenau ovens are two sets of three drawer chests providing masses of storage. These are finished in the Westminster smoked oak which helps to bring such warmth and character to this kitchen. To the right of the false chimney is the French door integrated fridge freezer which is perfectly positioned for easy access during food preparation.

Just around to the right of the main cooking run is a Gaggenau 400 series combi-microwave and a Gaggenau warming drawer underneath housed within tall Nickleby cabinetry. Beneath the warming drawer is a pot cupboard that opens out with plenty of deep storage for baking trays and tins, and an additional internal drawer that is perfect for storing smaller appliances like the nutri-bullet.

Cook’s Pantry

The cook’s pantry is located just to the right of the microwave and warming drawer, and provides masses of dry goods storage all in one place. The racks in the doors stop bottles and spices from disappearing to the back of shelves and the drawers below provide space for large packets. The countertop space is the perfect location for a kitchen aid to be stored out of the way along with freshly made cakes and other treats.

Breakfast Cupboard

Moving to the other side of the false chimney, the breakfast cupboard is another brilliantly concealed storage solution. The bi-fold door opens to the left with plenty of countertop space for the toaster and coffee machine with shelving above for tea and coffee supplies, cups and glasses and this can be easily left open while in use throughout the day and then closed off at night.

Acting as the main preparation area and positioned absolutely perfectly below the roof lantern, the island is the real workhorse of this kitchen and ensures this space functions perfectly but also balances scale and proportion too. With plenty of space for at least four stools, this is the perfect spot for when the family of four have breakfast together on the weekends or for quick informal family meals during the week. Rather than sit in a row, the clients chose for the seating to go around the corner making the space much more sociable. Positioning the sink on the island to the far left ensures there is plenty of prep space in front of the main cooking area and the Quooker classic hot tap means there is boiling water on demand. The integrated pull out bin conveniently sits under the counter to the right of the sink along with two integrated Miele dishwashers so that plates can be easily cleared after dinner.

Storage

Across the island there is additional cupboard storage with a charging drawer above that has enough ports to charge 6 items at once, and ensures that this keeps visual clutter to a minimum. Last but not least is the beautiful dresser which sits to the left of the main kitchen in the dining area and is finished in HM Lapel to match the perimeter cabinetry of the kitchen. This stand alone piece has been designed with space for a television, shelving above for cook books with glazed cupboards either side for crockery as well as plenty of cupboards underneath for additional storage for servingware.

Babington Natural limestone, from HM Flooring Library, is used throughout this space and was chosen for it’s versatility and low maintenance, the perfect flooring for a busy family environment from a practical point of view and aesthetically, it works brilliantly with the painted cabinetry and natural wood accents throughout.

PROJECT DETAILS

An entertaining space through and through, this light and airy kitchen / dining area is the perfect addition to this beautiful family home in Tunbridge Wells.

The orangery extension designed and manufactured by Westbury Garden Rooms provides plenty of light and space for the new Humphrey Munson kitchen and dining area which has a bespoke refectory table finished in the same accent wood as the kitchen. The combination of painted cabinetry with the dark Portobello wood accent, polished nickel hardware and light quartz worktops creates a layered look and feel that ensures the space feels perfectly balanced.

Kitchen

The original kitchen was much smaller and darker but the addition of an orangery helped to breathe new life into the space. As you walk in you see the large island which is finished in our bespoke colour HM Brolly Blue, and provides an essential visual anchor to the open plan room. Used primarily for food prep and providing masses of storage, the island has a small prep sink and Perrin & Rowe tap located opposite the cooking run, a knife drawer is handily situated under the counter to the left of the sink with a pull-out bin beneath keeping everything you need for food prep in one place.

On the far side of the island is a breakfast bar finished in Portobello oak which provides seating for three. Positioned adjacent to the breakfast bar is the Fisher & Paykel refrigeration/ freezer cool drawer which is perfect for grabbing a chilled bottle of wine for guests sat at one of the Havisham counter stools or the nearby dining table.

Cooking Run

The main cooking run features an impressive five oven AGA range cooker set within a false chimney. Concealed above is a bespoke Westin extraction unit and within the chimney either side of the AGA are open niches used to store everyday herbs, salt and pepper etc, within handy reaching distance. Behind the range cooker is an antique effect mirror splashback – perfect for bouncing light back across the room as well as keeping a conversation going with guests sat at the island.

Storage

Concealed behind painted Nickleby cabinetry just to the left of the AGA is a breakfast pantry which provides the perfect mix of open and closed storage, concealing an integrated Miele microwave as well as other small appliances like a Dualit toaster. Spice racks on the doors provide easy access to essential condiments, whilst the closed storage beneath the cold shelf is used for other items that you may want to hide away out of sight.

To the left of the island is a Sub-Zero fridge/ freezer which provides masses of cold food storage close to both the food prep area and the dining area so nibbles and drinks can be served to guests without getting in the way of the cook. The nearby HM refectory dining table seats 10-12 people which was a must-have for the busy family who wanted the freedom to have friends and relatives over in the evenings and weekends.

Sink Run

On the far right-hand side of the kitchen is the main sink run and concealed walk-in pantry. Above the sink run is open shelving with a plate rack at the centre. The plate rack interior is finished in Portobello oak which looks incredible against the painted HM cabinetry used on the perimeter, either side of the plate rack are two sets of three mirrored glass shelves which keeps this run feeling light and bright. Below is the main sink run which features a large Kohler sink, a Perrin & Rowe Athenian Tap with rinse and Quooker hot tap finished in polished nickel. Under the counter to the left of the sink is an integrated Miele dishwasher and to the right, a pull-out bin to help make clearing away after dinner quick and easy.

Walk-In Pantry

Last but not least a walk-in pantry is hidden away behind a door to the left of the main sink run. Open storage helps to maximise this small but mighty room with the open artisan shelving above used for jars and large serving ware. The cold shelf below stores large everyday appliances like a KitchenAid mixer and beneath the counter, deep shelves are used to store large baskets and hampers which can all be shut away keeping the kitchen free of unwanted and unnecessary clutter.

PROJECT DETAILS

This family home had recently undergone a huge refurbishment with the kitchen being the final piece of this incredible project.

Kitchen

The original kitchen was dark – even in the summer months – and lacked storage, so the brief was to create a much lighter and brighter kitchen that felt airy and spacious but also providing more storage and zoned spaces to better suit the family’s everyday requirements.

The focal point to this space is undoubtedly the false chimney and Lacanche Modern Cluny range cooker finished in stainless steel with an induction hob and gives this cooking run a contemporary edge. Bespoke Westin extraction is hidden above and worktop space either side allows for food prep, whilst the open niche shelving concealed within the false chimney provide the ideal spot to store everyday condiments, for example salt and pepper within arm’s reach of the Lacanche.

Island Peninsula

Following on to the right of the cooking run is the peninsula, used as the main food prep area, it has CRL Verona Quartz which is durable and easy to maintain – perfect for a young family. A countertop cupboard provides food storage as well as large swan neck drawers beneath the worktop and two cupboards on the opposite side of the peninsula providing masses of essential and easy-to-access storage space.

The light and bright sink run follows looks out onto the beautiful landscaped garden beyond and features a Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse and classic Quooker hot tap, all finished in polished nickel to match the surrounding hardware which works perfectly with the light Tailored Grey paint colour.

The tambour door is finished in Berkeley oak and runs along from the sink run and has open shelving above that provides essential storage space for glassware and larger items like mixing bowls or cook books. The tambour itself provides the perfect place to hide away the Dualit toaster and bread board from view, giving the kitchen a clutter free feel. To the left of the tambour door is a countertop drinks cupboard with a Miele microwave surrounded by shelving which is used to store tea, biscuits, coffee and crockery. Directly underneath is worktop space used for drinks prep and small appliance storage like a small coffee machine. The cupboard is flanked either side by tall Nickleby cabinetry, to the right is an integrated Miele fridge and to the left, crockery and tableware storage.

Dining Area

Directly across from the kitchen is the dining area which is used for everyday family meals as well as low key and relaxed meals with friends and family, a bespoke TV unit has been designed at the end of the dining table. Finished in HM Top Hat with polished nickel hardware it is reduced in depth to ensure it does not encroach on the dining area and is the ideal contrast to the light grey kitchen cabinetry.

PROJECT DETAILS

A cook’s kitchen through and through; we loved working on this modern country farmhouse kitchen project. This kitchen was designed for relaxed entertaining on a large-scale for friends staying for the weekend, but also for everyday kitchen suppers with the family.

Kitchen

As you walk into the kitchen the space feels warm and welcoming thanks to the soothing colour palette and Smithfield weathered oak finish. The kitchen has a large dining table with incredible views across the rolling East Sussex countryside. A separate scullery and walk in pantry concealed behind cabinetry either side of the French door fridge freezer provide a huge amount of storage and prep space completely hidden from view but easily accessible. The balance of cabinetry is perfect for the space and doesn’t compromise the light and airy feel we love to create in our Humphrey Munson kitchen projects.

The five oven AGA, set within a bespoke false chimney, creates a main focal point for the room and the antique effect mirror splashback has been installed for a number of reasons; it bounces the light back across the room but also helps with continuing conversations with guests seated at the island. This is a sociable kitchen with seating at the island to serve drinks and quick appetisers before dinner, or to sit with coffee and a laptop to catch up on emails.

Countertop Cupboards

To the left of the AGA is countertop storage with a bi-fold door which provides essential shelving for larger countertop appliances like the KitchenAid mixer and Magimix. Following on from the countertop cupboard is open shelving and the main sink run which features a large Kohler sink and Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse. To the right of the AGA is another countertop cupboard with a bi-fold door that not only balances the space in terms of symmetry, but conceals the breakfast cupboard which is perfect for storing the coffee machine, cups and everyday glassware.

Island

The large island is directly opposite the AGA and has been kept deliberately clear so that cooking and preparing food on a larger scale for family or friends staying all weekend is easy and stress free. The dining area which is just off of the main kitchen in the orangery seats six people at the table and is perfect for low key dining for a few friends and weekday meals.

Scullery & Walk In Pantry

Directly opposite the island is a bank of floor to ceiling Smithfield Oak cabinetry that has a Fisher & Paykel French door refrigeration and freezer unit finished in stainless steel in the centre, while either side of the fridge freezer is a walk in scullery and walk in pantry that helps to keep all clutter hidden safely out of site without having to leave the kitchen and guests.

PROJECT DETAILS
The first thing you notice when you enter this kitchen at The White House project is how calm and collected it feels, and the design brief was to create a workable space for young family life with the capability to easily entertain groups of friends and family in a workable and fuss free space.

Kitchen
This open plan kitchen is located in a newly built extension to the rear of the property and is flooded with natural light that evokes that wonderful feeling of letting the outside in all year round. The classic English design aesthetic of the Nickleby cabinetry combined with cool paint colours HM Duffle (perimeter cabinetry), HM Top Hat (island), and polished nickel Quilp handles creates a cool and contemporary space that not only looks incredible but will stand the test of time.

With a large formal dining table in a room just off the kitchen, incorporating an informal dining space for this busy family kitchen was essential and provides a place for everyday family meals or low-key dinners with close friends. The left side of the kitchen is used predominantly for food, drink and crockery storage. The end of the island houses a CDA wine cooler and just to the left of the island is a run of cabinetry with a large stainless steel Fisher & Paykel refrigeration and freezer unit. Flanking it either side are two crockery cupboards which provide masses of essential crockery and glass storage all within arms reach of the island and dining area – ideal for serving guests an aperitif as they perch on one of the Havisham counter stools at the island before dinner.

On the far side of the island is the main food prep area and directly opposite is the main cooking run featuring a Wolf range cooker, false chimney with concealed Westin extraction above and is flanked either side by countertop cupboards. To the right a breakfast cupboard with a Miele coffee machine and countertop space for a Dualit toaster, to the left a countertop cupboard is home to the integrated Miele microwave and beneath everyday appliances like a KitchenAid mixer. The door located between the end of the cooking run and storage run leads through to a walk in pantry, formal dining area with a wine room and drinks cabinet.

Walk In Pantry
This walk in pantry is quite literally the stuff of dreams, finished in HM Goose Iron the space offers the perfect balance of open storage with artisan shelving for jars, dry ingredients, small pans and tableware all of which can be easily reached with a bespoke movable Berkeley oak step ladder. Below the artisan shelving is a cold shelf that can be used as food prep area and storage for small everyday kitchen appliances, bowls of fruit etc. Underneath the cold shelf are large deep shelves for baskets and hampers and on the far right an integrated freezer which takes pressure off the main kitchen.

Everything you need in this project is where it should be, the design of the dining space for example has been fine-tuned and zoned for living at its very best with no fuss and no clutter. Everything has its purpose and what you need is always to hand. The layout of the rooms flows from the kitchen into an entertaining space complete with a bespoke wine room and drinks cabinet to serve the formal dining area.

Drinks Cabinet
A drinks cabinet that houses glassware and bottles providing a space for preparing and serving cocktails and pre-dinner drinks to guests. The glass shelves allow the cupboard to be lit during the evenings providing additional mood lighting during dinners, as well as cupboard space beneath for tableware and cutlery. Finished in HM Farthing Pale the painted cabinetry of the drinks cabinet contrasts perfectly with the interior and Berkeley oak wine room next to it, giving a cool calm feel to the dining space.

Laundry Room
A laundry room can be so much more than a purely utilitarian space, carrying on the same design ethos as the kitchen and other rooms in the project this utility is about functionality and beauty. Accessed via the children’s playroom, the laundry room leads directly out onto the garden and has a run of cabinetry that houses a Miele washing machine and tumble dryer, with a tall cabinet at the end for laundry, ironing board etc and a large butler sink and Perrin & Rowe tap at the centre.

PROJECT DETAILS

This project is quite simply L–shape kitchen perfection. As with so many of our projects in older houses, the design aesthetic must always be led by the architecture of the room. A re-imagining of the existing dark and cluttered kitchen led to this design which has the dining table positioned in the centre and acts almost as a prep table. The brief from our clients was to create a kitchen that had a classic English look at its heart but that provided all of the modern conveniences we have to come to know and love.

Kitchen

As you enter the kitchen from the main hallway, the Miele integrated fridge freezer is positioned just to the left hand side which essentially allows the kitchen to flow seamlessly as you walk in. Just to the right hand side opposite the main cooking run is a walk in crockery store and walk in larder that provide masses of essential storage.

The clients wanted a traditional range cooker but not necessarily something that would dominate the room. The choice to specify the small but mighty Lacanche Cormatin range cooker ensures that the kitchen design achieves the desired look and feel, but also crucially provides fantastic cooking functionality particularly with the easy-to-clean induction hob. The false chimney above conceals the excellent Westin extraction, meanwhile the antique effect mirror splashback allows the light to bounce back across the room.

Breakfast Cupboard

To the left of the Lacanche is a breakfast countertop cupboard with a bi-fold door that opens to reveal worktop space for preparing hot drinks with space to put away the freestanding Nespresso coffee machine, whilst shelving above is used to store a microwave and crockery. What’s really great about a countertop cupboard is that it not only provides essential storage space but you can keep it open when in use, and then neatly shut everything away keeping the worktop free of unwanted clutter.

Food Prep

We will always think about the zoning of a kitchen design and an essential part of that is food preparation. The area in between the Lacanche and the sink area has been left deliberately clear to allow plenty of worktop space for getting on with food prep. In the top drawer of the three door chest is a bespoke cutlery and knife insert so that everything you need is easily to hand. Then just along a little further is the sink run with a Villeroy & Boch butler sink, Perrin & Rowe Ionian tap and Parthian instant hot tap, both finished in aged brass to match the surrounding hardware. A Miele dishwasher is located under the counter to the left of the sink which helps to make clearing away after meals at the nearby dining table super quick and easy.

Flooring

Flooring is always a key detail in the overall balance of any room design and the Manoir natural limestone by HM Flooring Library installed here provides a classic and understated foundation to this area of the home. The natural markings of the honey coloured Manoir flooring work perfectly with the painted cabinetry, particularly in this larger tile size of 60cm x random. Installing underfloor heating is always an excellent idea and definitely something we would recommend as it works so well with natural stone flooring.

PROJECT DETAILS

When the idea for this new build open plan home in Ingatestone, Essex was conceived, it was done so with it being a forever home in mind. And the best thing about a self-build project? No compromise. After living in an older much darker property, the clients’ natural focus for this new project was an open plan space that felt light and airy. Our brief was to create an inviting space for family and friends to come and go as they pleased so with this in mind, the kitchen had to be carefully zoned to make full use of the available space whilst providing an entertaining area for multiple guests.

Kitchen

As you walk through the open plan dining/ living area towards the main kitchen, your eye is instantly drawn to the tall run of painted Nickleby cabinetry behind the island. Designed with entertaining for multiple guests in mind this kitchen includes top spec Miele appliances which are easy to use and renowned for their precision. On the far left of the run is a breakfast cupboard that conceals a built-in Miele bean-to-cup coffee machine and additional shelving for cups, tea, sugar and jars etc with worktop space beneath to prepare hot drinks. Located in the centre of the run is a Miele combi-steam oven, a Miele sous vide drawer below and a Miele single pyrolytic main oven providing the perfect combination of cooking appliances for entertaining. Ample cupboard space both above and beneath the cooking appliances provides essential storage for pots, pans and trays. Concealed at the end of the run closest to the pantry is an integrated Gaggenau French door fridge freezer.

Island

The island is used as the main food prep area with the Miele induction hob positioned here which features built in down draft extraction which removes unwanted odours as soon as they leave the pan. Beneath the hob to the left-hand side is a Miele gourmet warming drawer which, due to its larger capacity, is ideal when cooking for multiple guests holding more crockery and larger tableware when needed. Beneath the counter to the right of the hob is a knife drawer with an integrated pull out bin below for ease of use. On the far side of the island is seating for guests to sit and enjoy a glass of wine and talk to the host whilst dinner is being prepared.

Sink Run

The main sink run looks out across the beautifully landscaped garden and countryside beyond. In the centre of the run is a large Kohler deerfield sink, Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse, and a Zip Arc hydrotap. Below the worktop to the right of the sink is a Miele dishwasher ideally positioned so dirty dishes can be cleared away quickly and is close to the food prep area. Under the counter at the end of the run is a CDA wine cooler, perfectly positioned close to the island so that wine can be served to guests without getting in the way of the host cooking at the island.

The classic contemporary design of this project lends itself perfectly to the overall look and feel of this home. The soft colour palette of HM Tailored Grey on the perimeter cabinetry, boot room and utility and HM Farthing II on the island, along with polished nickel hardware works so well in this space and particularly well with the natural Burford limestone weathered flooring from HM Flooring Library.

PROJECT DETAILS

The kitchen of a large country house is not what it used to be. Dark, dingy and squirrelled away out of sight of the homeowners, the kitchen was purely designed to cater for the masses. Today, the ultimate country kitchen is a light, airy open room for actually living in, with space to relax and spend time in each other’s company while food can be easily prepared and served, and enjoyed all within a single space. And while catering for large shooting parties, and weekend entertaining is still essential, the kitchen also needs to feel homely enough for the family to enjoy themselves on a quiet mid-week evening.

Kitchen

This main kitchen of a large country house in the Cotswolds is the perfect example of a respectful renovation that brings an outdated layout up to date and provides an incredible open plan space for the whole family to enjoy together. When we design a kitchen, we want to capture the scale and proportion of the room while incorporating the client’s brief of how they like to cook, dine and live.

The huge bespoke chimney provides a central focal point for the cooking side of the kitchen and provides the perfect spot for the 1524mm Wolf range cooker with teppanyaki and chargrill. Powerful extraction is an essential here so the bespoke extraction designed by Peter Humphrey, Design Director and Founder of HM, in conjunction with Westin was an obvious choice. Either side of the chimney countertop cupboards conceal a myriad of appliances to the left, with a countertop pantry cupboard to the right.

Refrigeration is courtesy of Sub-Zero and does not disappoint. Carefully recessed into the wall so as not to dominate the room, the tall integrated fridge freezer with Sub-Zero wine storage and refrigeration drawers below, provides all the immediate cooling space this kitchen needs. There is a huge amount of prep space on the island countertop with the under-mounted double sink, two integrated dishwashers and two pull out bins below for maximum convenience. Seating for four provides a perch for friends to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, or a handy spot for the children to do their homework or watch the TV concealed behind the Nickleby dresser.

Dining

The dining space offers informal space for the family to enjoy breakfast in the light, airy Orangery space so we designed the breakfast cupboard which is positioned close by to have everything to hand. The Miele Nespresso machine is centrally positioned with space either side for storing cereals, mugs and teas etc, with a Quooker hot tap and prep sink below and also a handy spot for the Dualit toaster.

With all the perimeter cabinetry finished in HM Tailored Grey, and the island finished in classic HM Brolly Blue, the colour palette balances really well with HM walnut accent wood used for the cabinetry interiors and accents such as the integrated trays and the Havisham Counter Stools. Polished nickel hardware finishes the Nickleby cabinetry perfectly.

The last design detail is the Babington Natural Limestone flooring, from HM Flooring Library – limestone flooring is an excellent natural foundation for this kitchen design that feels incredible underfoot and works perfectly with the heritage of the house.

PROJECT DETAILS

The prep kitchen at this beautiful Cotswold Country House Project really captures the essence of the English country house. Nickleby cabinetry – a classic English design – provides the perfect base for this kitchen design and allows the space to flow seamlessly from the main kitchen.

Prep Kitchen

A dual control AGA is positioned in an original chimney with a bespoke overmantel designed to suit the heritage of the house perfectly. Cooking on the iconic AGA really comes into its own in the cooler months, with casseroles and ragûs largely forgotten about for the afternoon and then brought out for an early evening supper. The functionality of the dual control AGA works really well here as the boiling and simmer plates, or the ovens can be controlled independently.

Prep Table

The prep table is finished in pippy oak which has beautiful natural burrs bringing a soft feel to this room with painted drawers below. Two of the large drawers opposite the dresser conceal Wolf warming drawers – a huge undertaking for the project management and installation teams to overcome given that they are incorporated into a table with a stone floor below.

As well as cooking, this prep kitchen also offers a mix of storage thanks to the open shelves and glazed countertop dresser cupboards with large drawers below, providing masses of storage for tableware, servingware and cookware. In terms of clearing away, a large Butler sink is flanked either side by an integrated Miele dishwasher and Eurocargo pull out bin. The aged brass finish on the taps works so well in this understated space and is reflected throughout the hardware choices.

Walk In Pantry

Just off the prep kitchen as you make your way to the back of the house is the walk in pantry and cold room for storing masses of non-perishable and perishable items for when the house is hosting large shooting parties or entertaining on a big scale. Again, a mix of open shelving and drawers within the pantry provide the perfect amount of storage. Painted in HM Farthing II with the cabinet interiors painted in HM Linen ties this room in perfectly with the prep kitchen.

PROJECT DETAILS
The project at Park Lodge in Suffolk has the perfect combination of stunning interior architecture, plenty of natural light and a thoughtfully designed series of spaces that flow seamlessly into each other.

Kitchen
The kitchen is situated to the rear of the building in a recently built extension overlooking the garden and countryside beyond. The large open windows and roof lantern above create a light and bright space that feels open and airy even on a mid-winter’s day. The perimeter cabinetry has been finished in HM Lapel and the island finished in HM Farthing; these cool colours are balanced perfectly with the warmth of the Ludgate oak accent wood throughout alongside the polished nickel Quilp knobs.

The main focal point of this kitchen is the Lacanche Saulieu range cooker in bold graphite with a polished nickel trim which pairs with the cabinetry hardware throughout. The hob consists of 4 gas burners and a simmer plate which is perfect for a cooking a big Sunday lunch because of the space for multiple pans. This beautiful classic Lacanche is framed by a bespoke false chimney which conceals the HM Westin extraction whilst providing niches for small condiments and providing a well balanced focal point to the kitchen. Behind the Lacanche is a stunning quartz splashback, the same as the worktops which keeps the space behind looking clean and simple.

The cooking appliances were chosen with entertaining and busy family life in mind so situated either side of the Lacanche are two Miele ovens. The first on the left, is the Miele single pyrolytic oven and to the right of the Lacanche is the Miele combi-microwave with a Miele warming drawer underneath. The Gaggenau refrigerator and Gaggenau wine cooler are both conveniently positioned to the left hand side of the island making it easy to put away groceries and also get what you need for food prep and cooking as well as serving wine.

Sink Run
The main sink run is on the island which acts as the main prep area and is parallel to the Lacanche. There is a large Kohler deerfield smart divide sink, Perrin & Rowe Athenian tap with rinse in polished nickel and a Quooker classic hot tap in polished nickel. Integrated either side of the sink are two Miele dishwashers and two eurocargo bins to assist with clearing away additional dishes and glasses when entertaining. Directly opposite the sink is the breakfast bar which has been finished in Ludgate oak and is situated across from the main sink/ prep area separating the two spaces but allowing for multiple people to share the same space at any one time.

Island
The far end of the island is deliberately lower to keep the symmetry of the main kitchen. It is perfect for a tall bouquet of flowers, getting plates ready for a dinner party or a convenient place to prepare baking goods from the pantry. The day pantry at the far end of the main cooking run. Having a cook’s pantry means all your dry cooking ingredients are stored in one place rather than spread in different cupboards around the kitchen and for ease of use, the engraved drawers also means that you won’t get ingredients mixed up when in a hurry.

Utility Room
With Nickleby cabinetry finished in the same HM Lapel as the kitchen, this utility is a continuation of the kitchen. The sink run incorporates a large butler sink with rinse, something we always recommend in the utility in particular, with Miele washing machine and Miele tumble dryer the room is fit for purpose. This room also includes a bank of full height cabinetry to not only store essentials, such as the mops and ironing board, but also in this case, to hide pipe work and the fuse box.

The light painted cabinetry pairs wonderfully with the tones of the Babington natural limestone flooring from HM Flooring Library, and combined with the soft tumbled edges, it creates a calm and understated finished look that is perfect for classic and contemporary spaces.

PROJECT DETAILS

When our clients viewed a rambling Grade II listed former Vicarage positioned in a bucolic English village, their gut instinct was a resounding “yes”. Although major alterations would be required to bring this beautiful Georgian house up to speed with the twenty-first century, our clients’ focus was to restore and renovate in a sympathetic and understated way.

Renovating houses takes energy, diligence and patience in equal measure and the result is a classic English family home with simplicity at its core – comfortable, welcoming and perfect for entertaining family and friends. We worked with the clients to design the open plan kitchen and dining area, a walk in pantry and the utility/ boot room which offers the main access route into the kitchen via the back door.

Kitchen

The Nickleby cabinetry was chosen for its classic English style, and is painted in HM’s own colour palette designed exclusively in collaboration with Mylands. The perimeter cabinetry in the kitchen and utility / boot room is painted in HM Windward, while the island and walk in pantry are painted in HM Top Hat. All hardware is finished in aged brass as a nod to the Georgian heritage of the property.

As always, the zoning of the kitchen was the critical starting point: as keen cooks, the clients opted immediately to include a Classic Lacanche Chalonnais range cooker that would be positioned within the existing chimney and allows the Westin extraction to be hidden from view. Finishing this original chimney with a contemporary overmantel allowed this area to become the main focal point of the kitchen. The finishing design detail to this cooking area is the antique mirror splashback positioned behind the range cooker. Easy to clean and maintain, this robust and specially toughened splashback bounces the light back across the room.

Island

Directly across from the Lacanche range cooker is the bespoke kitchen island which not only serves as the main preparation area but also provides additional storage concealing a pull-out compartmentalised bin, Gaggenau undercounter refrigerator, a set of four drawers and on the opposite side seating for three. This island has been left deliberately clear to allow a large area for food prep as well as a serving area for large parties so that guests can help themselves.

On the other side of the island is a run of tall cabinetry including the Gaggenau French door fridge freezer which is positioned centrally. To the left of the Gaggenau is a large crockery cupboard and to the right is a day pantry to ensure everyday store cupboard ingredients are nearby for those speedy mid-week suppers and within easy reach of the island. The sink run sits underneath two large Georgian sash windows that look out across the beautifully landscaped gardens. A set of three drawers provides masses of storage for cookware and bakeware. The top drawer is perfect for storing utensils, the two beneath are larger and designed to store pots and pans.

Countertop Cupboard

Situated in the alcove to the left hand side of the chimney, is the countertop cupboard with bi-fold door which our clients use as a breakfast and appliance cupboard. The bi-fold door conceals the toaster and free-standing microwave and the large shelves above provide plenty of space for cups, glasses and drinks. The drawer below provides easy access to cutlery, and the Gaggenau under-counter refrigerator on the island behind provides immediate access to milk and butter making breakfast a quick and seamless affair.

Utility Room

This utility room has Nickleby cabinetry and finished in paint colour HM Windward – made exclusively for Humphrey Munson by Mylands – a large butler sink is at the centre of the run with a Perrin and Rowe aged brass tap that matches the surrounding hardware. Underneath the counter either side of the sink is a Miele washing machine and tumble dryer, left of this run are two artisan shelves with coat pegs. The highest is used to store away baskets, leads and umbrellas whilst the lower shelf provides a space for pet food. To the right of the sink run is bench seat and artisan shelf above that helps to keep coats and jackets in one tidy place.

Boot Room

The main entrance to the Old Vicarage project is via the boot room which has bespoke bench seating with lift up storage and artisan shelves with peg hooks above designed and manufactured by Humphrey Munson.

The Brampton natural limestone flooring is from our HM Flooring Library and is available to order.

PROJECT DETAILS

The beautiful Oak Lodge project in Norfolk has undergone a large scale renovation with Humphrey Munson commissioned to design, manufacture and install the kitchen and boot room. Access to the kitchen is from either the formal front door entrance, or more typically through the back door and via the boot room which was why it was so important to the clients to use the same cabinetry throughout. This space was all about creating a relaxed environment that the clients could enjoy with family on an everyday basis and friends and extended family at weekends.

With the addition of a stunning orangery to the rear of the home that opens onto the terrace, garden and pool area, the homeowners have created a breathtaking space that really captures the balance of a historic Edwardian home with all the modern conveniences we have come to know and love (underfloor heating being top of the list). The orangery has been designed and built by Westbury Garden Rooms and has a perfect mix of timber, glass and masonry together with a stunning glazed lantern ensuring the space feels light and airy throughout the year.

Kitchen

The focal point in the space is the false chimney, flanked on either side by tall cupboards – to the left is crockery storage either side of a Miele combi-steam oven and warming drawer, to the right is the column refrigerator integrated behind cabinetry doors. The Lacanche Chalonnais range cooker is finished in stainless steel with polished nickel trim. The hob consists of 4 gas burners, the simmer plate (perfect for a Sunday lunch) and the electric plancha (great for a cooked breakfast). Open chimney niches provide instant access to everyday condiments and herbs and spices.

Island

The island acts as the main prep area with an undermounted prep sink and plenty of worktop space for spreading out while you’re preparing meals for just two or perhaps for twenty. The integrated Miele dishwasher and integrated Eurocargo bin are located on the island so clearing away dishes after meals is quick and easy. Seating on the island provides space for the children to have their breakfast, and for friends to perch at weekend get-togethers while the hosts are cooking.

Breakfast Cupboard

The breakfast cupboard, finished in HM’s bespoke Portobello oak, is positioned handily to serve the dining area within the orangery. Countertop space provides a prep area for making drinks and simple breakfasts like cereal and toast, with an integrated under-counter refrigerator located below to provide easy access to milk, butter and juice. Shelving above provides space for storing teas, coffees, and crockery and glassware.

Sink Run

The main sink run is along from the cooking run and has a large smart divide Kohler deerfield sink with plenty more countertop space for baking. Heavy countertop appliances like the kitchen aid can stay out on this worktop which is positioned opposite a large pantry cupboard. This pantry cupboard was designed around an existing immoveable chimney so some areas have reduced depth due to this restriction.

Overall the impression of this kitchen as you walk is how light and airy it feels – there is an understated quietness to this kitchen and dining area which is really calming. The simplicity of the Nickleby cabinetry design together with the natural feel of the Portobello dark oak accent wood, the singular colour palette HM Brolly Blue and satin nickel hardware throughout creates a classic English look that is endlessly appealing.

Boot Room

Designating an area just off the main kitchen, ideally near the back entrance, which incorporates storage and a cloakroom is perfect placement for a boot room. This one is ideal with two full height coat cupboards and incorporating additional storage under bespoke seating that can hide away wellies, walking boots and trainers. A space that will always prove invaluable but particularly during the colder months.

PROJECT DETAILS

When the homeowners purchased this Victorian family home, they immediately set about planning the extension that would create a more viable space for an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. Approximately two years later their dream home is now finished. The extension was designed off the original kitchen and has a large roof lantern that sits directly above the main kitchen and soft seating area beyond. French windows open out onto the garden which is perfect for the summer months. This is truly a classic contemporary space that feels so calm and collected when you walk in – the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of modern family living.

Kitchen

Carefully zoning the kitchen, dining and living areas was the key to the success of this project and it works perfectly. The classic Lacanche range cooker is housed in a false chimney that is designed to suit the proportion and scale of the room perfectly. The Lacanche oven is the 100cm Cluny model with two large ovens – one static and one dual function static / convection with a classic 5 burner gas hob. Finished in stainless steel with a brass trim, this classic French oven looks completely at home in this Humphrey Munson kitchen.

Island

The main prep area is on the island positioned directly in front of the main cooking run, with a prep sink handily located to the left hand side. There is seating for three at the island with a breakfast bar at the opposite end to the prep sink which is conveniently located near to the banquette dining area. Delineated from the prep area by the natural wooden worktop finished in Portobello oak (the same accent wood used throughout the kitchen), the breakfast bar is a great spot for serving drinks to friends before dinner or for the children to have their meals at breakfast time and after school.

Sink Run

The sink run is on the other side of the L shape in this kitchen and it has open artisan shelves above for storing everyday items like glassware and tableware. Either side of the sink is an integrated Miele dishwasher and a pull out Eurocargo bin to make clearing away dishes really easy. The use of open shelving here really helps the space to feel open and calm and there is a curved countertop cupboard in the corner providing space for storing teas, coffees and biscuits so that everything is to hand when making hot drinks.

The Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer has Nickleby cabinetry surrounding it with space above for storing cookbooks but there is also another under-counter fridge in the island for additional cold food storage. The cook’s pantry provides masses of storage for dry ingredients as well as housing the freestanding microwave which is always a fantastic option when you want to keep integrated appliances to a minimum in order to maximise storage space in the main kitchen.

Hardware throughout this kitchen is antique brass – this is a living finish that weathers with use over time. The glass globe pendant lighting above the island was designed by us and has antique brass hardware too. The Babington Natural limestone flooring from HM Flooring Library has bags of character thanks to the natural fissures within the stone and creates the perfect flooring choice for this classic contemporary kitchen.

PROJECT DETAILS

Originally designed as a hunting lodge and later extended in the mid 18th century, this beautiful Georgian family home is surrounded by parkland with stunning views across the rolling countryside and farmland beyond. The homeowners wanted a classic English kitchen to reflect the Georgian heritage of the home but also one that would suit their busy lives and the needs of their small children.

Kitchen

The original chimney houses the AGA which acts as the central focal point in the space and divides the kitchen from the scullery run behind and the walk-in pantry. The original pulley is still visible above the overmantel and would have been used for cooking meats and lowering pans of water over the stove.

The Nickleby cabinetry works so well in this project – the simplicity of the door design combined with the cool grey colour palette gives the space a really calm and relaxed feel. The Nickleby prep table acts as the main prep area in the kitchen and fits in perfectly with the heritage of this Georgian family home. Located just opposite the 3 oven dual control white AGA with gas module, the prep table is finished with a Pippy oak worktop and painted in HM Farthing II.

Walk In Pantry

The walk in pantry has Georgian style screens with the Georgian door all handmade by our cabinetmakers in Felsted, Essex and installed along with the kitchen cabinetry. The pantry has artisan shelves for storing everyday items and deep drawers for storing dry goods. With plenty of worktop space and a sink just below the window, the pantry is the perfect spot for baking and preparing dishes.

Scullery

Behind the main kitchen is the scullery run with one long run of drawers and cupboards and two large countertop cupboards for storing glassware and tableware. With the dishwasher and bin located either side of the run, this is the main washing up area with the sink under the large Georgian sash window that looks out across the beautiful countryside. The fridge freezer is also located in this area and cleverly recessed in the chimney the other side of the AGA.

PROJECT DETAILS

We loved working on this project in Gerrards Cross to create a dream kitchen and dining area for a family of four who love to cook and spend time together with family and friends. This project actually has two Nickleby kitchens in one space – there is the main kitchen with the AGA run and island, and a second prep kitchen with a Nickleby prep table, large countertop cupboards and banquette seating.

This is an incredible space – really light and airy – with views across the beautiful garden. As with all our projects, for us it is all about the look and feel of the kitchens – and when you walk into this project it is super calm and welcoming – a wonderful space for the whole family to enjoy.

Kitchen

The main kitchen has the 4 oven night store electric Aga set in a false chimney with the large kitchen island located in front of it. The island acts as the main prep area in this kitchen with the sink positioned so that the integrated dishwasher and pull out bin are just nearby. There is also an under-counter fridge on the island closest to the dining area so that things like milk are nearby for the drinks pantry.

Dining Area & Breakfast / Drinks Pantry

Locating the large breakfast / drinks pantry in the dining area of the kitchen is the perfect place for making hot drinks, and also for storing cups, saucers and glassware. Although there is another dining room in the home, this dining area in the kitchen is used most of the time and certainly on a daily basis – it’s perfectly located with the windows looking across the lovely garden.

Prep Kitchen

Over in the prep kitchen there is a Nickleby prep table with an English pippy oak worktop and beautiful handmade Nickleby cabinetry throughout. This kitchen is mostly used for baking and has a large Miele oven with a gas hob above and plenty of prep space on the table which also has plenty of storage for baking trays and equipment. The full height countertop cupboards either side of the chimney provide masses of space for appliances like the kitchen aid mixer, food processor, blender and baking equipment.

Cook’s Pantry

Bridging the gap between the main kitchen and the prep kitchen is the large Cook’s pantry flanked on side by the column refrigerator and freezer. This ensures that the majority of the dry goods and then chilled goods are zoned together making it quick and easy to grab ingredients for those super quick mid-week meals.

PROJECT DETAILS

During the initial planning stages of their kitchen project, a key priority of the homeowners of this Edwardian villa in Barnes Village was to embrace the architectural heritage of the house and install a kitchen that was sympathetic to the history of the home. Ushering in a new era of design, the Edwardian period home was typified by light, airy and spacious rooms with large windows – a drastic change to the clutter and darkness of the preceding Victorian period. The influential Arts and Crafts movement, led by William Morris, rejected the Victorian penchant for mass produced furniture assembled in relentlessly brutal working conditions, and instead championed the artisan craftsmen using traditional joinery methods in smaller workshops.

Kitchen

This Nickleby kitchen, as with all our cabinetry, was made at our workshop in Felsted, Essex by our talented team of cabinetmakers who pair traditional joinery techniques with modern innovation. The kitchen has our bespoke HM Westminster smoked oak accents throughout which gives the space warmth and character. The focal point is the chimney with range cooker which is flanked by extra high wall cupboards leaving plenty of worktop space below. The large column fridge and freezer are located to the right of the chimney for easy access during food prep and cooking.

Island

The island was designed with a circular breakfast bar in the centre to reflect the symmetry and design of the beautiful curved window. The breakfast bar is finished in the same HM Westminster oak while the rest of the island and perimeter run is a stunning quartz worktop. The HM Havisham bar stools fit perfectly in the space and have had their legs finished in the same Westminster oak finish. As the island acts as the main food prep zone, it also includes a prep sink and integrated eurocargo bin for maximum convenience.

Sink Run

The main sink run which overlooks the garden, has plenty of worktop space either side and has a Miele integrated dishwasher just to the left of the sink. The Callisto tap and rinse are by Perrin & Rowe, while the boiling hot water tap is by Quooker. The taps, rinse and the Spenlow handles are all finished in polished nickel. The drinks countertop cupboard located on the far left of the main sink run houses the Nespresso coffee machine, teas and also has space for things like cups and saucers, mugs and the teapot.

Flooring

The flooring is Babington natural limestone from HM Flooring Library, this has really beautiful natural fissures across the surface giving the stone a unique finish. Due to the hard wearing nature and easy maintenance of limestone it really suits heavy traffic areas such as kitchens, boot rooms and hallways that open onto the outdoors. The grey undertones of this limestone combined with the soft tumbled edges create a calm and understated finished look that is perfect for classic contemporary spaces.

PROJECT DETAILS

The open plan kitchen / dining area leads down into the sitting room that has French windows accessing the garden – it’s an incredible open plan space for the whole family to enjoy. The Nickleby kitchen, with its key values of symmetry and proportion, and the overall simplicity of this classic English design, really suits this space perfectly. With one long run and a peninsula, the kitchen also makes great use of two hidden pantries for storing dry goods and baking supplies keeping countertops clear of visual clutter.

Kitchen

The kitchen was designed bespoke to suit the space and the peninsula represents a brilliant design solution providing additional storage of six pull out drawers and seating for the children during cooking and meal times. Opposite the main cooking area, the large worktop on the peninsula acts as the food prep area and is a great sociable space for the family to gather around.

The classic Nickleby chimney creates a focal point for the space with the Falcon range cooker in the perfect spot for usability of the prep and cooking area. The splashback is antique effect mirror which is great for bouncing light around the room and giving the illusion of additional space.

Sink Run

Along the rest of the single run is the main washing up area with an integrated Miele dishwasher and eurocargo pull out bin either side of the Kohler deerfield smart divide sink with the Callisto tap by Perrin & Rowe and the classic Quooker boiling tap (both finished in polished nickel). At the far end is the American style fridge freezer which is located just across the walk in pantry – another great design solution built into the supporting column. The soft colour palette in this project gives a super serene feel to the space with the polished nickel accents from the Nickleby pulls and knobs giving an underlying feeling of luxury.

PROJECT DETAILS

The country house is a peculiar English phenomenon and reflects a particularly unique English character and way of life. It was a privilege to work with the homeowner of this Georgian farmhouse in Hampshire and give this beautiful family home a kitchen it really deserved.

Kitchen

The expertly crafted Nickleby cabinetry which has symmetry, simplicity, proportion and restraint at its heart, together with the antique brass accents throughout, really reflect the heritage of this wonderful Georgian home. As with all our projects, it’s always about the look and the feel of the space and when you walk through the hallway into the kitchen your attention is drawn across the island towards the main cooking area.

A false chimney houses the Lacanche Savigny range cooker – a stunning bespoke range with black enamel and antique brass trim. Either side of the Lacanche are extra tall niche cupboards to house a selection of oils and condiments. The false chimney really helped the kitchen to feel as though it had always been there, when in fact, this space was previously used as a children’s play room.

Banquette Seating

Along from the Lacanche is the banquette seating which is set in front of a large Georgian sash window. This is a such a great spot for a cup of tea, reading or catching up on emails, and also has shelving to the right hand side of the marble fireplace for the home audio system and cookery books.

Island

The island acts as the main prep area with the double under-mounted ceramic sink flanked by the Miele dishwasher to the left and the Euro-cargo pull out bin to the right. The Ionian tap by Perrin & Rowe has the rinse option to the left, and a Quooker boiling hot water tap to the right. There is seating by Vincent Sheppard at the island for three with plenty of worktop space either end for food prep.

Dresser Run

The dresser run along the wall has two countertop glazed cupboards with glass shelving and integrated lighting which are used for storing glassware and an impressive gin collection, with plenty of pull out drawers below for storage of crockery and serving dishes. Towards the back door is the countertop breakfast cupboard which houses the toaster and Nespresso coffee machine which shelving above for storing teas, coffee, sugar etc as well as cups and saucers.

Walk In Pantry

There is a pantry at the end of the kitchen through a bespoke door made by our cabinetmakers in Felsted and has additional storage for dry goods and artisan shelving for items in daily use. The pantry is also home to a large American fridge freezer.

Dining Room

Just off the main kitchen is the dining area with two large Nickleby dresser cupboards flanking the double doorway into the kitchen. Keeping the cabinetry design the same across the kitchen, dining room and pantry, as well as the simple architrave, helps to ensure a good flow through the space with a sense of consistency.

The colour palette is a blend of soft greys from the HM paint range which paired with the Carrera-esque quartz worktops helps to give this space a really cool, calm and welcoming feel.

PROJECT DETAILS

A light, bright London kitchen that has a spacious, calm and uncluttered feel perfectly suited to modern family living. From weekend BBQs with family and friends to speedy mid-week meals, the space can adapt to whatever is required.

Kitchen

This is a classic Nickleby kitchen – simple, symmetrical and perfectly proportioned for the space. All made by hand in our workshop in Felsted, Essex, this kitchen has been constructed by our incredible team of talented cabinetmakers using traditional joinery methods combined with modern innovation.

Island

The island acts as the central hub around which kitchen life revolves – from food prep, to catching up on emails with a cup of coffee, it’s designed with multi-purpose use in mind. The double sink by Kohler is located within the island and has the Parthian mixer tap by Perrin & Rowe and the Quooker classic hot water tap. To the left of the sink area is the Eurocargo pull out bin, while the Miele dishwasher is located to the right hand side for maximum convenience during food prep and clearing away after meals.

Cooking Run

Behind the island is the stainless steel Lacanche Cluny range cooker which is housed in a bespoke false chimney with an overmantle above to frame the space and create a focal point. The Lacanche has the classic five burner hob together with a static electric oven with and a convection electric oven – both with grills. Either side of the range cooker are counter-top cupboards – to the left hand side is an appliance cupboard housing the Kitchen Aid mixer and other handheld appliances, while the right hand side cupboard is using for coffee and breakfast items. The beauty of countertop cupboards is that they can conceal smaller appliances like toasters and free-standing coffee machines etc, which leaves the counters clear of visual clutter resulting in a space that feels calm and uncluttered.

Storage

The bank of Nickleby tall cupboards to the left of the island house the tall crockery cupboard, the column Miele refrigerator and Miele freezer as well as a Cook’s Pantry. Integrating the cooling appliances behind the Nickleby cabinetry helps to ensure the calm and collected feel to this space. The corner of this L-shaped kitchen has open artisan shelving for storing cookery books and provides additional worktop space to the kitchen.

PROJECT DETAILS

We were delighted to work on this incredible project at The Old Rectory which really shows off the versatility of the Nickleby kitchen design.

Drawing inspiration from the classic English country houses from the Georgian era, this beautiful classic English kitchen captures the diligence and brilliance of traditional cabinet-making at its finest.

Kitchen

Using a simple colour palette, we designed the kitchen to have a large preparation table as the focal point of the space. Made from solid oak, with painted legs and drawers and a natural oak worktop, the preparation table becomes the natural hub of the kitchen and has the added benefit of plenty of drawer units for storage.

All appliances are carefully concealed behind Nickleby double door cupboards, including the Gaggenau refrigerator which is installed behind painted cupboard doors with freezer drawers located underneath.

Pantry

Similarly, a series of bespoke pantries; including a cooks pantry, a breakfast pantry and a drinks pantry, have been designed to fit the kitchen space perfectly to the homeowners’ specifications. The use of pantries to hide away worktop appliances, and other items, minimises visual clutter, and ensures the kitchen maintains its calm appeal.

PROJECT DETAILS

The key design goal of the homeowners was to install “an extremely well-made kitchen with quality appliances that would stand the test of time”. The kitchen design had to be timeless with all aspects using the best quality materials and appliances.

Kitchen

The new kitchen is an extension to the farmhouse and the dining area is set in a beautiful timber-framed orangery by Westbury Garden Rooms, featuring a bespoke refectory table that we constructed on site due to its size.

The project involved a major extension and remodelling project that resulted in a very large space that the homeowners were keen to utilise and include amongst other things, a walk in larder, a scullery, and a large island unit to act as the hub of the kitchen. The colour palette is simple and creates a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

The design of the orangery allows light to flood in along one length of the kitchen so we wanted to ensure that light source was utilised to maximum effect. Installing the distressed mirror splashback situated behind the range cooker allows the light to reflect back over the island unit, as do the hammered nickel pendant lamps.

The sheer scale of this project, together with the exceptionally high specification of the design, make this kitchen genuinely thrilling. Every element, from the polished nickel handles, to the integration of the Wolf steamer cooktop, has been precisely considered.

This meticulous attention to detail ensures the kitchen design is absolutely true to the homeowners’ original design brief and utilises all the innovative expertise our years of experience have provided.
