Outdoor Living In The City Published: 22-06-2025 Simple, handmade and fun, this outdoor kitchen by Humphrey Munson is designed for city living where you don’t have a huge amount of space. This is actually a really exciting month at HM as we head into the British summer because we’ve got lots of really super outdoor kitchen projects nearing completion. Don’t you think everything tastes better when you cook and dine outside? Especially now we’ve got the lovely warmer weather in England to enjoy for the next few months. Just like the indoor kitchens, outdoor kitchens come in all shapes and sizes and we wanted to share with you this particular project which shows just what is possible in even a small city garden. In the heart of the historic St. Albans conservation area sits this little oasis of calm which offers an escape from the bustle of urban life in the city. So let’s share a bit more about this really compact outdoor kitchen. The bespoke Markham cabinetry is handmade with hardwearing European oak and finished with bespoke brushed chrome Stagg handles. The worktops are ‘Naturali Calacatta Oro Venato Soft Touch’ by Laminam; a smooth, polished finish with a sophisticated natural vein. The technical excellence guaranteed by Laminam also makes this product resistant to all environmental conditions, including exposure to heat and the outdoors. In the winter this is covered up and protected with a bespoke cover by CanvasMan.The beauty of bespoke furniture means the cabinetry and worktop were designed to precisely house the statement Kamado Joe Grill. This Series III model is the most innovative and performance-driven series grill to date, ensuring a really premium charcoal grilling experience. With 2903 cm² of uninterrupted cooking space and accessories including the Joetisserie and DòJoe, you’ve got a super cool bit of kit for enjoying alfresco dining with friends and family any night of the week. Each outdoor kitchen is designed as a bespoke project, but there are some things that are almost universally requested. For example, the sleek Markham cabinetry does a super job of discreetly concealing an integrated pull-out bin and a hidden utensil drawer, meaning trips back and forth to the kitchen can be kept to a minimum and the chef can stay engaged with the cooking and their guests. In this design, additional storage for charcoal is also built in below for easy access. The idea with this design is to create easy symmetry by placing the large grill front and centre, and then utilising the countertop space either side for prep space. This means last minute bits of prep can be easily undertaken and food can be moved easily onto and off the grill, with no need to use the indoor kitchen at all. Humphrey Munson outdoor kitchens are the perfect addition to any garden, be it a small city oasis or a sprawling country escape and can be designed accordingly. There are so many options and clever tricks to create the perfect outdoor kitchen to suit your needs – lately we’ve been seeing lots of projects with integrated fridges, built in sinks, hidden bins, wine and beer drawers, space for pizza ovens, beer taps and smokers. Lots to think about and you can really go to town or keep it simple. The options are vast and our design team are always on hand to offer their expertise and guidance to help you create the perfect space. See more on the St Albans project here.
