What grout colour should I use for stone flooring?

Published:

We typically recommend ARDEX grout for our showrooms and projects. ARDEX supplies excellent quality wall and floor preparation products and are used on residential and commercial projects including the largest shopping mall in Dubai and the iconic London Olympic Aquatics Centre.

In terms of colour, the answer is that is totally depends on the floor tile covering itself and the overall aesthetic design of the room where the stone is being installed.

In the project shown above, the clients specified the Brampton natural limestone – a lovely soft grey limestone floor tile with natural markings perfect for contemporary or traditional spaces. The natural markings are typically swirl patches and lines that give the stone such character.

When it came to choosing the grout – the clients chose ‘Natural Almond‘ by Ardex Flex FS which has the perfect neutral base.

The alternative grout colour to use would have been ‘Silver Shimmer‘ which we used in the Spenlow kitchen in the Humphrey Munson showroom in St. Albans.

‘Silver Shimmer’ is a much darker grey colour that really brings out the coolness in the tile and worked perfectly with the cabinetry colours and textured Smithfield weathered oak in this room.

Looking at these two kitchens within the context of the colours and the various finishes, you can see how important the grout colour is to achieving a cohesive interior design.

In the Hampshire project, the colours are much greener / warmer in tone with the darker and more luxurious Portobello oak used as the accent wood. Looking at the colours and oak tone, it was determined that the ‘Natural Almond’ grout would allow the more neutral side of the Brampton stone to dominate and as such work better with the overall interior design scheme.
