Spenlow Utility Room at the HM showroom in Felsted, Essex

Published:

We are so happy to share these images of the Spenlow utility room in the Felsted showroom. This space was previously part of the old office which was relocated last year to the back of the building, and has been completely transformed into a total dream of a utility room with crisp, clean cabinetry and aged brass hardware.

The Spenlow cabinetry is a bespoke design to HM created by Peter Humphrey around 5 years ago as a contemporary spin on a traditional raised and fielded panel door. The cabinetry is all hand-painted to the very highest standard by our amazing team of hand-painters and the finish is just absolutely incredible. The colour is called Goose Iron and is a bespoke colour to HM created exclusively for us by Mylands and we used the same colour in marble matt emulsion on the walls.

In terms of laundry, we feel that the best washing machine and tumble dryer models are manufactured by Miele and we always recommend these products to our clients for durability (the machines are tested for up to 20 years of use, assuring long term performance), energy efficiency and high performance e.g. automatic load recognition and all the other fantastic features that ensure the Miele laundry appliances are consistently rated the best in the market. Just like all our showroom spaces, this is a real life utility room and if you visit us you may find that either machine is mid-cycle.

A good size sink is a laundry room essential and this ceramic butler sink is perfect for the design – we use ceramic butler sinks because it is a robust surface and resistant to impact and scratches which ensures that it will be durable and low maintenance in the long term. Our cabinetmakers at Humphrey Munson do a fantastic job of ensuring a super close fit for the butler sinks into the cabinetry and they pride themselves on this level of detail.

The aged brass Mayan taps by Perrin & Rowe will weather with age as the aged brass is a living finish so the patina will develop and darken over time.

If you’ve got lots of ironing going on, a good quality ironing board is essential and this model by Brabantia is the best we’ve found especially as the size (135 cm x 45cm) is great for ironing bigger items such as bed linen and table cloths.

Every utility room needs a utility cupboard to put away all the essentials like the vacuum cleaner. We can create bespoke shelving in the cupboards and discuss with clients what will go in cupboards like this so we can ensure everything fits in.

We also love all the storage for the KINN Living products we are completely mad about at HM.  Non-toxic, plant based and PH neutral, the cleaning and laundry products were launched by British mother and daughter brand to great acclaim.

A drying cupboard that is thermostatically controlled is the perfect final piece of the utility room specification. This is such a fabulous addition to the laundry room particularly for drying delicate items that cannot go in the tumble dryer such as cashmere or silk and ensures things can be dried easily and out of the way.

Practically they are super useful, but also aesthetically we feel this is really useful if you have a utility/boot room that you may use to access the home rather than the front door – it’s lovely to be able to keep drying clothes completely out of the way so that your entrance is clear and uncluttered.

Lastly, don’t forget the flooring! These Fairford natural limestone tiles are a great mellow shade to provide a cool, neutral base to the cabinetry. With the walls and cabinetry painted the same colour, we wanted to keep the floor light in tone but with a little warmth which these tiles capture perfectly – we used a grey grout so it tied in with the colours in the rest of the room. The Fairford natural limestone floor tiles in the image above are 60cm x random and there is more information available here.

If you’d like to come and see this new utility room in person, please give us a call on 01371 821300 or email us at info@humphreymunson.co.uk to make an appointment. Both showrooms are only by appointment so please don’t make the journey to see us unless you have confirmed this with us first.
